On 9 April 2016, for the second time since November 2014, the Multi National Fair was held at the Four Square Rum Distillery and Heritage Park in St. Philip. The event was started by the volunteer-led non-profit organization “Be the Change Barbados” which is dedicated to sustainable development, social justice and spiritual well-being. In keeping with the 50th Anniversary of Barbados’ Independence celebrations, the theme of the Fair was “Celebrating Our Strengths”. More than 200 participants – small businesses, non-profit organizations and diplomatic missions – presented a colourful programme in the areas of Entertainment, Business & Entrepreneurship, Children’s Education and Development, Recycling, Food & Agriculture, Spirituality, Sports & Fitness, and Volunteerism & Community Service. With the help of seven volunteers, the German Honorary Consulate ran a beer garden. The shady spot invited patrons to linger and enjoy an ice-cold beer and a bockwurst and quickly became a popular meeting point with the more than 4,000 visitors. The beer and sausages were donated by the Honorary General Consul of Barbados to Germany, Mrs. Regine Sixt, and the proceeds of about EUR 10,000 go to her children’s aid foundation “Drying Little Tears” which will use the funds to support a local project. The proceeds generated by the other participants will be donated to local charities of their choice as well, whereas the proceeds from the sale of admission tickets will go to youth programmes.
