BRIDGETOWN - 12th June 2017. On behalf of the German Embassy in Port of Spain, the German Honorary Consul to Barbados, Mr. Andreas Kusay, today presented the head of the Barbados Community College Music Programme, Mr. Roger Gittens, with a cheque for $ 3,000 in support of the restoration of a Steinway & Sons grand piano. The handover was also attended by Mr. Michael Gibbons, Managing Director of Pianoman Caribbean, who is in charge of reconditioning the musical instrument.

Dr. Lutz Goergens, the German Ambassador, first heard about the restoration project when he came to the island in March for the celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Barbados and Germany. A music lover himself, he spontaneously decided to support the project.

The grand piano was built in Germany in 1966 and shipped to Bullen’s Music Store in Grenada in 1967. It was discovered in the neighbouring island by Pianoman Caribbean in 2015. Mr. Gibbons immediately realized what an invaluable asset it would be for the students enrolled in the music programme. He started a fund raising campaign aiming to collect the $ 58,703 it would cost to purchase the piano, ship it to Barbados and restore it.

The Steinway arrived in the island in November 2016 and its restoration is well underway, thanks to the generous donations from private individuals, charitable trusts and the corporate community. “We had hoped to hear the piano played for the first time by September 2016, but unfortunately, the project has been delayed due to a lack of funds. We are still about $ 9,000 short of our goal and are hoping to win over more people to support this worthy cause”, says Mr.  Gittens. Since its inception in the late 1990s, more than 250 students have graduated from the BCC Music Programme with an Associate Degree. All donors will be treated to a free concert once the piano is completed and set up. Interested parties please contact the Barbados Community Foundation ( ) and donor cheques should be made payable to The Barbados Community Foundation.
