All persons who wish to stay in Germany for more than 90 days are required to obtain a residence permit.

Process:

Applicants must apply in person for a visa at the Embassy before arriving in the country. Not subject to this requirement are citizens of the EU and citizens of Australia, Canada, Island, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, the Republic of Korea, Switzerland and the United States of America.

Upon submission of all required documents the application will be forwarded to the Aliens Authority (“Ausländerbehörde”) competent for your intended place of residence in Germany. Applications can take several months to be processed. The Embassy does not have any control over the processing time of the Aliens Authority. After the application has been approved by the Aliens Authority, the Embassy will issue a residence permit in the form of a visa.
