German Embassy focuses on climate change activities

This year has seen several activities on climate change in Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean Region. The German Embassy is proud to be a sponsor of three projects: The Trinidad & Tobago Energy Week (7-11 November), the Trinidad and Tobago Youth Forum on climate change (5 November) and the conference “Greening Tobago – How and Why?” (10 November). In fact, the conference “Greening Tobago – How and Why?” is a joint project of the German Embassy and the British High Commission in Port of Spain. Taking. The conference brought together representatives from different Ministries, the Tobago House of Assembly, different NGO’s working in the field of sustainable tourism, Hotel owners and utilities to discuss Carbon Neutrality, the Green Economy and Renewable Energies in Tobago. It was thel kick off more joint activities of the German Embassy and the British High Commission on climate change in Tobago.
Ongoing is also the Climate Change Outreach Programme of the Pointe-à-Pierre Wildfowl Trust which has been initiated with funds of the German Embassy in August of this year. 17 primary schools and 7 secondary schools have been visited to date to point out links between human activities and climate change.
In St. Lucia, the German Embassy funded a project of the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI). They implemented a project to catalyse action by civil society to counteract the negative impacts of climate change. The project aimed to help stakeholders from civil society to understand more completely how climate change will impact the forest, coastal and marine ecosystems examine impact on the livelihoods of the many Saint Lucians who depend on these ecosystems for goods and services, including coastal protection and erosion control on hillsides.
Awareness rising and battling climate change as well as finding strategies for mitigation and adaptation are some of the most important causes for the future. The German Embassy is looking forward to support upcoming projects in the region on these matters.
